De rol van water in je lichaam
Je lichaam bestaat voor 60% uit water. En elk glas dat je drinkt, of net niet drinkt, heeft een directe impact op je energie, concentratie en welzijn 1. Beter begrijpen waarom hydratatie belangrijk is voor je lichaam, is de eerste stap om beter voor jezelf te zorgen.
Wat is hydratatie?
Hydrateren betekent je lichaam voorzien van het water dat het nodig heeft om normaal te functioneren. Niet alleen wanneer je dorst hebt of sport, maar de hele dag door, continu.
Elke dag verliest je lichaam ongeveer 2,5 liter water via transpiratie, urine en ademhaling2. Zelfs wanneer je gewoon aan je bureau zit. De rol van hydratatie is dus eenvoudig: dat vochtverlies aanvullen.

Waarom hydratatie je dagelijks functioneren beïnvloedt
Ken je dat energiedipje halverwege de namiddag? Die moeite om geconcentreerd te blijven na de lunchpauze? Die hoofdpijn die plots opkomt zonder duidelijke reden? Deze kleine dagelijkse signalen hebben soms een eenvoudigere verklaring dan je denkt. Een gebrek aan hydratatie kan er één van zijn.
Wat zijn de gevolgen van uitdroging?
Onvoldoende hydratatie heeft concrete en onmiddellijke effecten op je lichaam, die veel verder gaan dan enkel dorst.
studies tonen aan dat een verlies van slechts 1 tot 2% lichaamsvocht al voldoende is om je concentratie, kortetermijngeheugen en stemming5 te beïnvloeden. Je hoofd voelt het vaak eerder dan je lichaam.

Hydratatie en sport
Wat je spieren van je vragen
Tijdens inspanning voert je lichaam warmte af via transpiratie. Eén uur matig sporten kan leiden tot een verlies van tot wel 600 ml water14, afhankelijk van de intensiteit en de temperatuur. Maar wat je via zweet verliest, zijn niet alleen milliliters water15: je verliest ook mineralen die essentieel zijn voor een goede spierwerking.
Te lang wachten met drinken tijdens inspanning vergroot het risico dat je uithoudingsvermogen afneemt, je herstel langer duurt en krampen optreden. Spieren slaan water op samen met hun glycogeenreserves 16. Regelmatige sporters hebben daardoor een hogere vochtbehoefte dan gemiddeld17, of je nu op zondag vijf kilometer loopt of elke dag traint.
Je verliest ook water in rust
Airconditioning verlaagt de luchtvochtigheid in de omgeving. Het gevolg: je lichaam verliest meer water via de huid en ademhaling, zonder dat je het merkt18. Dit soort vochtverlies, ook wel onmerkbaar vochtverlies genoemd, is extra verraderlijk omdat je niet noodzakelijk dorst voelt.
Ook zomerse warmte en lange dagen onderweg verhogen je vochtbehoefte22, zonder dat je dat altijd bewust aanvoelt. Het zijn typische situaties in een actief leven waarin je hydratatie aandacht verdient, zelfs zonder grote fysieke inspanning.
Signalen dat je misschien niet genoeg drinkt
- Een plotse vermoeidheid, zonder duidelijke reden23
- Hoofdpijn
- Een doffe of drogere huid dan normaal
- Een droge mond
- Moeite om je concentratie vast te houden25
- Donkere urine
Herken je jezelf in één of meerdere van deze situaties? Dan is je hydratatieniveau waarschijnlijk onvoldoende.
Waarom je beter niet wacht tot je dorst hebt
Dorst is een beschermingsmechanisme. Op het moment dat je dorst voelt, functioneert je lichaam al onder zijn optimale niveau.
Hydratatie en elektrolyten
Waarom water alleen niet altijd volstaat
Water drinken is noodzakelijk. Maar om dat water goed door je cellen te laten opnemen, heeft je lichaam elektrolyten nodig.
